Chip’s Hut

120-square-foot “Sukiya”-style hut used as an office/retreat for a translator of Chinese Acupuncture texts. Built of recycled Douglas fir timbers with bamboo floors, and plaster infill walls.

For this little place, we drew inspiration from two Japanese concepts:

Kiwari: A traditional Japanese layout and proportioning system whose modular basis contributes to efficient design and construction, and ties beauty directly to an aesthetic based on human-scale proportions.

Kino-bi: The beauty that is revealed when an object’s appearance is paired with its essential functions.
